Title Vanguard ship account book of Thomas Mickell
Date 1872-1876
Scope & Content Volume 7 1872-1876

Following description taken from paper by Douglas Stein (See Notes):

Vessel account book, Bark VANGUARD, kept by Thomas Mickell, master, between February 1872 and February 1876. These are primarily the ship's disbursements and freight expenditures at various ports incurred during her voyages. Ports of call included Galveston, Mobile, New Orleans and Key West in the USA; Bristol and Liverpool, England; Le Havre, France; Constadt, Russia; and Queenstown, South Africa. (Enclosed with the volume is a photocopy of a letter of recommendation written to Captain Mickell by New Bedford whaling agents Parker & Phillips. However, the dates of service mentioned in this letter would indicate that this was probably Thomas Mickell's father or uncle.)

Note: research by Douglas l. Stein (Past on Paper co.) in Jan. 2005 indicates that the VANGUARD was owned by Howland & Frothingham of New York. She was built at N.Y. in 1850, and was surveyed at Liverpool in September 1874.
