Following description taken from paper by Douglas Stein (See Notes):
Account book / daybook, ca. 1787, and later ca. 1870-1877. Early entries were possibly kept by William Verstilles, and there are accounts with Daniel Van Voorhis regarding paintings/portraits, jewelry, etc. Verstilles may have been a merchant from Wethersfield, CT. and Daniel Van Voorhis was a Gold & Silversmith in New York. Later accounts were perhaps kept by Roswell Grant, ca. 1870-1877, primarily for miscellaneous farm and labor expenditures, etc. "William Verstilles account book, New York, 1787" written on inside front cover. "Roswell Grant account book, 1873" written on first page. There are expenditures for coal, bridge fares, opera tickets, music, a baseball, etc.
