Oral history interview of Henry Wayner, recorded by Tony Macro on November 13, 2014. Shirley van Sicklin Wayner joins this interview part way through.
In this interview, Henry Wayner discusses the residents on Main Street to whom he delivered mail. He also discusses his work in aviation ordinance during World War II, including the munitions with which he worked. Together, he and Shirley discuss the Wapping section of South Windsor Shirley grew up and where they live. Shirley also discusses her father's work as an electrician and projectionist in Hartford, CT theaters.
Orgnaizational or Biographical History
Henry Wayner was born and raised in Manchester, CT, and attended Manchester Schools. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and worked with aviation ordinance during World War II. After the war he returned to Connecticut and began working as a postal worker, delivering the mail in South Windsor from Bossen's Store on Main Street. Wayner worked for the US Postal Service until 1988, when he retired.
Shirley van Sicklin Wayner was born the daughter of Arthur M. van Sicklin and Hazel Parkington van Sicklin and was raised in South Windsor. She attended Wapping Grammar School and Ellsworth Memorial High School, from which she graduated in 1947. She and Henry Wayner married after World War II, and together had two sons and a daughter. She stayed home with the children when they were younger, then worked in the South Windsor Assessor's Office for twenty years before retiring.
