Typed page reports "Eli Terry, the most important figure in American horology, was born 1772 in this gambrel roofed house built by his father Samuel upon his marriage." Eli completed apprenticeship with Daniel Burnap in 1792 and later revolutionized clockmaking by mass producing his cheap "Yankee Clock" which cost about $4.00. Eli's first clock, made in Burnap's shop, is in the Bristol Clock Museum. In 1811, Eli and brother Samuel made the tower clock in the steeple of the Scantic Church. The red paint in the house was made of mutton tallow and elderberry juice, put on hot to keep the boards from cracking. Stoughton states "in 1889, the house was in deplorable condition." |
