Description |
Photocopy of two cards on one page plus the back of the second card on a separate page. The first reports that Samuel Terry built house about 1762-64 for his bride Hulda Burnham. Hardware made in Stoughton's iron shop. Lath and paint are described. Second card reports that Eli was born in the house; describes his apprenticeship to Daniel Burnap and his move to Plymouth. "Eli was the originator of the cheap "Yankee Clock" which placed the clock within means of the poorest family." In 1816 he made the wooden shelf clock and could retire from clockmaking in 1823 with "fortune and reputation as Americas leading clockmaker." List of clocks that he and brother Samuel made: New Haven church 1818, Plymouth and Terryville churches; East Windsor Congregational Church 1811, Waterbury Baptist Church 1845. |
