Title |
Commodore Charles Green's naval hat |
Date |
ca. 1860 |
Description |
This is a cocked naval hat with metallic gold braid. The hat is made of animal fur, likely beaver felt. It is stored in a matching cardboard box. There is an additional medallion of gold braid that has fallen off. The back of the hat has a design appliqued in ribbon. The hat originally belonged to Commodore Charles Green. Green (1812-1887) was born in New London, CT and served in the US Navy from 1826-1867, retiring with the rank of Commodore. He married Sophia Tudor of South Windsor and built the house at 660 Main Street. This hat was gifted to Town Farm in the 1960s by the Green family when they were cleaning out the house in preparation for selling it. |
