First Congregational Church is a two-story Greek Revival style building with quadrangular bell tower topped by pointed steeple. Massive portico is supported by four Doric columns. The First Ecclesiastical Society in Windsor was established in 1633. Due to difficult river crossing, the outlying area of "Windsor Farms" petitioned General Assembly in 1680 and 1691 to create a separate society. In 1699, the Second Ecclesiastical Society established in "Windsor Farms" (East Windsor). The first church, located just north of the Burying Ground within sight of the Windsor Palisado, had no floor or seats; improvements were made in 1709 and a second church build in 1714. In 1761, the third church was built south of the first ones, and was the only church in town to have a steeple. In 1768, East Windsor became a separate town and the church became First Ecclesiastical Society. In 1816, the church was moved, west (out of the street) to its present location. In 1845, South Windsor became a separate town and built the present church, known as First Congregational Church of South Windsor. Timothy Edwards was the first minister, called in 1694 and serving until his death in 1758. |
