Edwards Cemetery Main Street |
Scope & Content |
Edwards Cemetery, also known as God's Acre or the Old Burying Ground, dates from 1708 and is the oldest burying ground in South Windsor. The first and second meeting houses were located adjacent to this cemetery before the present church was built in 1845. Famous carvers Ebenezer Drake and Thatcher Lathrop carved stones in the cemetery. The Rev. and Mrs. Timothy Edwards are buried beneath a rare table monument. Two obelisks date from the 1820s; and it has more graves of colonial veterans than any other cemetery in Connecticut. The memorial gateway was donated by the Connecticut Society of Colonial Dames of America in 1929. |
